For our first coffee release from Asia, we turned to our partner Raw Material - a social enterprise that reinvests all profits back in the communities they work with. Raw Material has been active in Timor-Leste, a neighboring country of Indonesia, for a number of years. Coffee is Timor-Leste’s most important crop with 37% of households depending on it for part of their income. However up to recently, most production was sold in the commodity market resulting in low and volatile prices for farmers. Together with the local community, Raw Material built a wet mill in Atsabe to sustainably improve coffee processing, and hence quality and pricing.
The lot we sourced is grown in Laclo and processed in Atsabe. Laclo is a small village with 500 families of which 80 produce coffee cherry. The families bring their coffee to the Atsabe station where the coffee is graded, processed and dried carefully. The mill sits at 1400masl but most farmers’ land is situated between 1400-1600masl. Supported by Raw Material, the mill provides training to farmers around cultivation, picking, and processing.
This lot was processed as a Honey, meaning that after sorting, the coffee is partly depulped. Some of the mucilage stays around the beans as they are transferred to raised drying beds where they stay for 25 days. We like honeys for our Easy Rider series as it often produces very smooth & balanced coffees. This is not an overly fruity or very acidic coffee. It’s a balanced, easy-drinking coffee with lovely notes of plum, apple, cacao and a more herbal, rosehip finish.
Earlier this year, Timor-Leste was hit by serious flooding which displaced 14,000 families. Raw Material set up a donation to which we’re participating. Buy a hessian green coffee bag in our shop and donate whatever you can. All proceeds are directly transferred to Raw Material’s urgent appeal for help. Or you can simply donate here.

Roasting & Freshness
We aim to deliver fresh but rested coffee you can dig into right away. That means most coffee we ship is 2-10 days old. If you prefer the hyperfresh stuff, let us know in the order notes box on your cart page. Our coffees taste best 1-6 weeks after roasting but can be enjoyed for up to 3 months or more if vacuum packed and/or freezed.
