Easy Rider Series
Finca Frailes was created 30 years ago by three close friends and lifelong coffee producers (Calvo, Marín, Méndez). Located in Tarrazu, they mainly grow Catuaí and process their cherry at the specialty focused micro mill in Palmichal. Here lots are processed at the highest quality standards and kept separate to retain full traceability. The coffee was dried with some mucilage on the bean for a balanced, smooth, sweet cup.

Finca Frailes was created 30 years ago by three close friends and lifelong coffee producers, Gerardo Calvo, Zaira Marín and William Méndez. The farm is located in the central Tarrazu region of Costa Rica. The friends mainly grow Caturra and Catuaí. They replace part of the trees every year to maintain the farm’s health and productivity. They pick their cherry and have it processed at the local Palmichal micro-mill.
Palmichal is a specialty focused mill that works with 30 producers in the micro regions of Palmichal, Puriscal, Tarrazu and Frailes. All farmer’s lots are processed individually to retain full traceability. The station applies very strict quality control techniques and has patios and elevated beds to enable various kinds of drying. Palmichal also has a nursery with over 330,000 plants. They sell these to producers at cost price to make it easier for farmers to renovate their rootstock.
The honey lot we sourced from Finca Frailes was processed as a Yellow Honey by Palmichal; this means the beans were dried with some of the mucilage still on the bean. Yellow Honey means there was less mucilage on the beans compared to a Red or Black Honey process. On the drying patios the coffee is moved every hour to ensure uniform drying. Average drying time on the patio is around 8 days.
We’re always excited when the coffees from Costa Rica start to land. It’s an amazing country with a flourishing coffee scene of over 50,000 coffee farmers, most of them smallholders. The country has a thriving network of coop processing stations that work at very high quality standards. Although the cup profiles can vary significantly, this honey coffee from Finca Frailes is everything we look for in an Easy Rider release : gentle, balanced, a complex sweetness of red apple and plum mixed with a sugary/nutty nougat finish.

Roasting & Freshness
We aim to deliver fresh but rested coffee you can dig into right away. That means most coffee we ship is 2-10 days old. If you prefer the hyperfresh stuff, let us know in the order notes box on your cart page. Our coffees taste best 1-6 weeks after roasting but can be enjoyed for up to 3 months or more if vacuum packed and/or freezed.
